5 Fun Things to Do With Kids in Massachusetts This Summer (Beyond Cape Cod)

Written by Jackie Crawford-Ross | 5/20/26 11:54 PM

(That isn’t Cape Cod or the beach)

When people think of summer in Massachusetts, they usually picture Cape Cod traffic, crowded beaches, and trying to find parking near the ocean. But honestly? Some of the best family memories happen nowhere near the water.

As a Massachusetts Realtor and boy mom, I’m always looking for fun, realistic day trips that work for actual families — places where kids can run around, parents can survive the outing, and everyone leaves happy (or at least tired). Here are five of our family’s favorite summer spots across Massachusetts that are absolutely worth adding to your bucket list this year.

1. Catch a WooSox Game at Polar Park — Worcester, MA

If you’ve never taken your kids to Polar Park, let this be your sign. It’s one of the most family-friendly stadiums we’ve visited, and honestly feels manageable even with little kids in tow.

A few things that make it easier:

  • Sit along the first-base side for shade during day games
  • Weekend afternoon games are perfect for younger kids
  • The concourse has plenty of food options and space to move around when attention spans disappear

It somehow feels exciting without being overwhelming, which is basically the dream scenario for parents.

2. Spend the Day at Southwick’s Zoo — Mendon, MA

This is hands-down my favorite zoo in Massachusetts.

Southwick’s feels more relaxed and interactive than larger zoos, and it’s incredibly easy to turn into a full-day adventure. The kids love seeing the animals up close, and there’s enough variety to keep both toddlers and older kids entertained.

My best advice:

  • Get there right when they open
  • Plan lunch at the onsite restaurant
  • Aim to leave before nap-time meltdowns hit

It’s one of those places that somehow exhausts kids in the best possible way.

3. Mini Golf + Ice Cream at West End Creamery — Northbridge, MA

This place is basically summer in Massachusetts wrapped into one stop.

West End Creamery has:

  • Mini golf
  • Farm activities
  • Great outdoor space for kids
  • Some of the best ice cream around

And the homemade waffle cones? Worth the trip alone.

It’s the kind of spot where you plan to stay for an hour and accidentally spend half the day.

4. Davis Farmland — Sterling, MA

If you have younger kids, Davis Farmland is pure magic.

Between feeding animals, running through the splash area, and bouncing on the giant jump pads, kids can burn energy for hours. It’s chaotic in the best way.

A few survival tips:

  • Arrive early for the best animal interactions
  • Bring towels and extra clothes
  • Expect your kids to leave soaking wet no matter what your plans were

This is one of those core-memory summer places.

5. Have a Rainy-Day Backup Plan at Apex Entertainment — Marlborough, MA

Every Massachusetts parent needs an emergency indoor plan for:

  • Random thunderstorms
  • Brutally hot days
  • “We need to get out of the house immediately,” afternoons

Apex is our go-to because you can knock out bowling, arcade games, ropes courses, and food all in one place.

Pro tip:
Set the arcade budget before you walk in unless you’re emotionally prepared to negotiate claw machine economics for the rest of the evening.

Final Thoughts

You don’t have to spend hours in Cape traffic to create a really fun Massachusetts summer with kids. Some of the best adventures are the simple day trips close to home — baseball games, mini golf, splash parks, zoo days, and ice cream stops that turn into traditions.
